Everest Base Camp Trek is always a good idea for your vacation in Nepal because it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller. Everest Base Camp is what the world knows as the real’ Shangri-la’. As the word describes itself, the Everest region is a heaven on earth with the highest mountain in the world, Mt. Everest looking over the vastness of the earth. Everest Base Camp Trek takes you through the historical journey that Sir Edmund Hillary along with Tenzing Norgay Sherpa took to conquer the peak in 1953. The route is filled with thrilling experience through the rough mountain terrains, across forest and rivers and passing through many waterfalls which directly comes from the melted glacier ice of the Himalayas. The scenario of the white snow-capped mountains is magnificent in contrast to the blue sky. You also get the opportunity to know the culture of the Sherpa people living for generations in the Himalayas. Mostly, the famous Sherpa people, the mighty mountain climbers reside in the high altitudes of the Himalayas. There are also magnificent monasteries up there, amidst the high mountains. You can observe the huge stones carved with chanting and prayers along the trail in the Himalayan villages.

Everest Base Camp Trekking is not only a simple trek; it takes you through an embarking journey of life. This is the route that many risks in order to capture a glimpse, or even overcome the highest summit in the world. Throughout the history of mankind in the Himalayas, the Everest has been the subject of study. Today the trek has been made easier with rigorous trial and errors. There are also the well-known Sherpas of the Himalayas who help us to guide through the trekking routes. In our itinerary of 14 days, there is enough time to visit all the places and become amazed by the diversity of nature and cultural harmony. While traveling we spend the night in the village lodges and know about the people, their traditions, as well as their food. For about 2 weeks you can wake up in the mountains to view the amazing Himalayan range glistening in the sunlight. Despite the steady schedule of this trek, trekkers are still required to be in good health with moderate physical fitness.

Our 14 Days Journey to Everest Base Camp begins from Lukla, a visitor’s hub in the Khumbu region. We trek through the Sagarmatha National Park, where we can find varieties of flora and fauna under conservation. The park is also enlisted in the UNESCO world heritage site due to its diverse vegetation and animals at the brink of extinction. The highest point that we reach in this trek is about 5545m high which is the peak of Kala Patthar, which literally means the “Black Rock”. The peak provides some of the spectacular views of the Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse. During acclimatization, we will make the best use of the day as we go hiking around the areas to explore wonderful places or visit the spiritual monasteries, instead of resting ideally.

Day 1 :

Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla and trek to Phakding (2600m; 3hrs)

We take a flight from Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu to Lukla airport in the Khumbu region. You can enjoy the thrilling flight over the high mountains as Lukla is located on a high slope in the Khumbu region. We meet our porters and guides in Lukla and start trek by descending to Phakding. Stay the night in a lodge in Phakding.

Day 2 :

Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3440m; 5 hrs)

Trekking through the Sagarmatha National Park we reach Namche Bazaar. Today we will have our first glimpse of the magnificent Mt. Everest as we ascend and descent throughout the trail. The trail also passes through many Sherpa villages and calming forest and river paths. Stay the night in a lodge in Namche Bazaar.

Day 3 :

Acclimatize in Namche Bazaar

We will stay one more day in Namche Bazaar in order to acclimatize. Acclimatization is very important in a high altitude journey such as to the Everest Base Camp. You can either rest up in the lodge or look around the village or hike to the nearby hill. We suggest you take a short hike, a few miles from the village and get the magnificent view of the Everest from there. Stay the night in the same lodge.

Day 4 :

Namche Bazaar to Phortse (3800m; 5 hrs)

We start our adventurous trek from Namche Bazaar. We descend to the valley of Dudh Koshi after leaving the Namche village. On the way, we find numerous chortens and monasteries decorating the path and villages. We visit Mohang and Rongbuk Monastery that are famous in the area and get an essence of the traditional monastery. As the path descends once more towards Dudh Koshi, we reach Phortse. Stay the night in a lodge in the Phortse village.

Day 5 :

Phortse to Machermo (4450m; 5-6 hrs)

We trek early from Phortse and ascend the hill to Machhermo. We need to pass through a beautiful Rhododendron forest and walk alongside the Dudh Koshi River to reach Machhermo. The journey brings us closer to Mt Everest and we can get grand views of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam. Stay the night in a lodge.

Day 6 :

Machermo to Gokyo (4750m; 5 hrs)

We have an excellent view of the Kangtaiga valley and the great Mt. Cho Oyu (8153m) from the viewpoint. We start the trek to pass through a wonderful valley, walk along the river banks and climb mountain ridges. We can also view the shimmering blue lakes of the Gokyo valley with the backdrop set by the mighty Cho Oyu. Stay the night in a lodge.

Day 7 :

Gokyo to Gokyo Peak (5360m), to Thangnak (4700m; 6hrs)

On the seventh day, we start the day early in the Gokyo village to take a short hike to Gokyo Ri to get a great morning view of the sunrise over the Himalayan mountain range. The Gokyo Ri provides one of the spectacular views of Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Makalu. We can also hike to the Ngozumba glacier, which is the longest glacier present in the Himalayas. It is a chance not to be missed after arriving at this point. We descend from the mountain and trek to Thagnak and then rest there for the day. Stay the night in a lodge.

Day 08 :

Thangnak to Cho La pass (5300m) to Dzonghla (4830m; 6-7 hrs)

We trek to the Cho La pass which is a very steep slope with glacier traverse on its east side. The top of the pass is magnificent with welcoming prayer flags. To the south we can see the Ama Dablam soaring through the clouds, to the east is Lobuche and to the west is Cholatse. After passing through glaciers we reach Dzonghla with the great view of the said mountain peaks. Stay the night in a lodge.

Day 09 :

Dzonghla to Lobuche (4900m; 4hrs)

The route from Dzongla to Lobuche is a short trek of about 2 to 3 hours. We can enjoy the trek exploring the beauty of the Himalayan peaks all covered in glistening white snow. The trail is easy and you can reach Lobuche with the light walk. We rest at Lobuche and prepare for the next long day.

Day 10 :

Lobuche to Kala Patthar (5545m), to Lobuche (7 hrs)

The trail from Lobuche to Everest Base Camp is via Gorak Shep. We hike the Kalapattar to get a great view of the Everest. As altitude gets higher, the air gets thinner and we may get altitude sickness. From the Basecamp, we can see many colorful tents of other travelers. We also get the brilliant view of Nuptse, Pumori, and Khumbuste from the base camp. We return through Gorak Shep and stay the night in Lobuche lodge for one more night.

Day 11 :

Lobuche to Dingboche (3710m; 5 hrs)

We trek to Dingboche, a beautiful village with crop fields protected by stone walls from wind and grazing animals. The village also has a great view of Mt. Makalu, Lhotse, Chalotse, Tawache and Ama Dablam. Stay the night in a lodge.

Day 12 :

Dingboche to Monjo (2900m; 6 hrs 30 min)

We start the trek from Dingboche and head to Monjo, which is the first village we encounter after we enter the Sagarmatha National Park. The village has a wonderful landscape and you can explore the area for various types of flora and fauna. Stay the night in a lodge.

Day 13 :

Monjo to Lukla (2800m; 4 hrs)

We head from Monjo back to Lukla village after passing through the trail with breathtaking views of the once up close mountain peaks a few days back. We can get all the views of the great mountain peaks extending from east to west in the northern direction from the trail. Stay the night in a lodge in Lukla village.

Day 14 :

Fly from Lukla to Kathamandu.

We take a flight from the Lukla airport to head back to Kathmandu. The takeoff from the Lukla’s mountain cliff is equally thrilling as the landing during the arrival to the airport. We can have magnificent overall views of the whole Himalayan mountain range from the airplane throughout the journey.

How fit do I need to be to do this trek?

Annapurna Base Camp is a Grade B or a moderately difficult trekking route. So any fit person can do this trek, even if you do not have any previous experience. You should be aware of what to expect and mentally prepare for it. Then, as long as you will too, you can.

How long do we walk every day when doing Annapurna Base Camp trekking?

On average, you walk about 4 to 6 hours per day. One or two days can be as less as 3hrs and one or two days can be as long as 7hrs.

What is the highest altitude reached in this trek?

The highest altitude reached is 4190m. This is the elevation of Annapurna Base Camp. ABC is the highest we will climb in this trek.

What about battery charging and hot shower facilities?

Yes, you can charge batteries en route. Charger should be brought. There are hot shower facilities as well. You may have to pay a certain amount for both ($1-$2). Negotiate. Also, a hot water facility could be free at a lower elevation.

Are there ATMs on the way to Annapurna Base Camp?

No. There are no ATMs on this trek route. You will have to draw enough cash in Pokhara or Kathmandu. There are a number of ATMs in these cities. Everything is paid in Nepali rupees. So money should be exchanged before the start of the trek.

What about internet access?

Yes. The Internet can be accessed in most places. Sometimes, there might be some technical problems. The Internet in Nepal is not as fast as you are used to and at times you can just lose connection.

Is it necessary to hire Guides/trekking agency for Annapurna Base Camp trekking?

Not really. It depends on you. If you want, ABC trekking can be done independently. You could hire a guide and a porter by yourself instead of going through an agency or not hire a guide at all. Although, not having a guide can be a little problematic during the offseason.

It really depends on you. Is it your first time in Nepal? How confident are you of being able to find your way around? How pressed on time are you? If you go through an agency, it will be costlier but everything will be planned. You will only have to come, trek and return.

How much do guides and porters cost?

For the Annapurna region, pay for guides range from $20 to $30 per day and porters take $15 to $25 per day.
